Full title: Thomas Browne, Religio Medici (Leiden, 1644)

One year after Browne’s edition, this Latin translation of Religio Medici was published in Leiden, showing its immediate widespread appeal. As in Marshall’s engraving, but reversed, a man falls headfirst towards the sea, only to be saved by a divine hand emerging from the clouds. At the mouth of the figure are the words à coelo salus, meaning ‘from heaven, salvation’.
