During the war, many messages had to be sent to inform those serving or their kin about events and situations that related to them. To make it possible to get important information out quickly, pre-printed versions of standard messages were used, where the relevant, personal information was added by hand. This may make the messages seem impersonal and harsh, not least when considering the often disturbing information shared, for example about someone missing in battle or confirmed taken prisoner.
