Prisoner of War notification

Prisoner of War notification

During the war, some ten million people were captured and sent to detention camps. The captured did not only include soldiers and other service personnel, but also civilians.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) filled an important role in keeping a register of those interned, and helping them get in touch with those back home.

The pre-printed card is an example of the kind of card prisoners were given to send home. Only very limited details were given. It can only be imagined what those receiving the card would feel. In many cases, their loved ones had been reported missing for some time, and learning that they were alive would presumably have been a great relief.
