MS 49

This German copy of the five figures from c. 1420 is the latest known set to survive. MS 49, often referred to as the 'Wellcome Apocalypse', is a richly illustrated manuscript containing texts on a variety of subjects, including the Antichrist, the End of Days, subjects related to the Ars moriendi (the ‘Art of dying well’), moral and allegorical works, and medical and prognostic works. The collection of images and texts related to both medicine and religion shows the strong relationship perceived between the two during the Middle Ages.

This copy of the five figures includes images of the 'complex systems', which can be viewed in the next unit.
