Vase made of artillery shell
This is a typical example of trench art, where a used brass cartridge shell has been embellished to be used as a vase or holder.
This item was brought back from France by Harry Wells, a company sergeant major in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. His family tell the story of how Harry was in France looking after a German Prisoner of War camp there. He built up a friendship with a German POW and gave him cigarettes. The German fashioned two German brass shells into decorative poker holders/vases, which he gave to Harry.
