Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Commentary
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Key Points:

  • Rapidly growing keratotic nodule (central adherent keratin horn) on sun exposed site

  • Dome shaped

  • Can occur in scars or chronic ulcers and sometimes presents as eroded papule or plaque

  • More common and more aggressive in immunosuppressed patients e.g. organ transplant recipients

  • Standard treatment is surgical excision

  • Cure achieved if low risk cancers excised. High risk cancers can lead to nodal and distant metastases in up to 5%
