Proof, plate editing and print

Comparison of the proof with the published plate reveals the sorts of editorial changes made during the proof process. These include:

1. Addition of ‘Section’ and ‘Tab’ numbers, together with species numbers to the names associated with each plant image, so that they match the printed letterpress. For example, ‘8’ and ‘2’ are added to ‘Sect.’ and ‘Tab.’, respectively, whilst ‘12’ is added to the name of the left-hand plant on the top row.
2. Where plants have been engraved, but no longer follow the sequence in the letterpress, a page reference is added. For example, the left-hand plant on the top row in the printed plate includes a reference to page 182 of the letterpress (‘V. pag. 182’).
3. Name changes are made. For example, the name of the left-hand plant on the top row is changed from ‘Gramen loliaceum panicula ramosa maritimum. C.B.’ to ‘Gramen loliaceum paniculâ ramosâ lutea Magnol.’ Examination of the reverse of the printing plate shows that ‘maritimum. C.B.’ was removed and replaced with ‘lutea Magnol.’, together with carets to the unchanged part of the name. An image of a plant with the name ‘Gr[amen] loliaceum panicula ramosa maritimum. C.B.’ is squeezed into the bottom right-hand corner of the previous plate in the printed volume.
4. Modification of details on the plant images. For example, in the left-hand plant on the top row, the points on the flowers are made more acute and leaf density is increased in the printed image compared to the proof image.
5. New plants are added. For example, ‘Panicum Ind. Spica longiore villosâ et interrupta.’ is added to the bottom right-hand corner of the printed plate.
