Description: Medieval alchemy was based on the idea that metals were composed of mercury and sulphur, and these had to conjunct in order to effect the philosophers' stone. These images originate from a version dated 1582, from which these watercolours (frame nos. 26078-26091) are copied, which is held at the British Library (Harley ms. 3469).
