On 20 July 1969, millions tuned in their television sets to see astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin become the first humans to walk on the Moon. At 11.49pm, President Richard Nixon placed an historic telephone call to the Moon. He said, “For one priceless moment in the whole of history … all the people on this earth are truly one…” The Apollo XI crew safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean four days later.
