James Hannington - St. Peter's College

This window memorial is the central feture of Hannington Hall, the main dining hall of St. Peter's College, Oxford.

In the centre you can see Bishop James Hannington, an Anglican missionary, saint, and martyr. Hannington was bishop of the Diocese of Eastern Equatorial Africa, in roughly the territory of Modern-day Uganda, which officially came under the control of the British Empire in 1894.

Hannington was executed soon after his arrival in Africa, for his Christian beliefs and for refusing to listen to the orders of the king of Buganda, Mwanga II. He is considered to be one of the first of the Uganda Martyrs.
