This pen-and-ink drawing for eastern North American downy wood mint is characteristic of drawings in Oxford University Herbaria attributable to Jacob Bobart the Younger. The reference to Virginia, in pencil, on the drawing label probably indicates that the specimen was collected by the naturalist and clergyman John Banister (1650-1692), who sent large amounts of material to Bobart the Younger and William Sherard (1659-1728) from the Colony of Virginia.

The drawing lacks score marks around its outline indicating that it was not traced for transfer to the copper plate. Frederick Hendrick van Hove (c.1628-1698) appears to have copied and reduced the size of the drawing as he transferred it directly onto the copper plate for engraving and printing in Part 3 of the Historia.
