Clone of Icon of Mahatma Gandhi

Carved icon of Mahatma Gandhi located in the University (St. Mary's) Church, on High Street, Oxford.

This carved icon is located on the ceiling in the Northwest corner of University Church, above the rear balcony. It can be seen best by climbing the stairs at the rear of the nave.

Gandhi visited Oxford in 1931 and likely also visited the University Church, although this is unconfirmed. His emblem was erected later to commemorate his presence in Oxford. India eventually gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1947.

More information about the emblem can be found on the Oxford and Empire website, here.
