Receipt for a payment made by Professor Edward Burnett Tylor to Robert Hanley Hall of the Hudson’s Bay Company, dated 6 December 1900. This payment, or transfer of funds, made through the Bank of Montreal for an amount of $154, was to reimburse R. H. Hall for his arranging the purchase (by an unidentified ‘agent’) of a Haida totem pole (‘Star House Pole’) from the village of Masset, in British Columbia, as well as for additional sundries and the cost of transporting the item from there, via Port Simpson, to Victoria, before its onward journey – across Canada by rail, and by steamship across the Atlantic – to Oxford, England.
