Persepolis palace complex

The site of Persepolis, in the modern Marvdasht plain, 57km NE of Shiraz.  One of the four Persian capitals (also Susa, Babylon, Ecbatana).

The palace complex, on an elevated terrace platform (300x455m) was first laid out by Darius I, beginning in c.518 BC.  Securely dated to Darius' reign are the Tachara or 'palace of Darius', the treasury, and the Apadana, the audience palace of Darius.
