Browne’s collection included specimens from the sea, such as coral. He was particularly interested in starfish, which he called ‘sea-starres’, as their five arms made them a perfect demonstration of his perceived pattern of fives in nature. In The Garden of Cyrus he poses the question, ‘Why amongst Sea-starres nature chiefly delighteth in five points?’.
