Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town (1666-1679)

Commentary
Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town (1666-1679)

The Castle of Good Hope (Kasteel de Goede Hoop) was built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679 to replace the Fort of Good Hope built in 1652 out of clay and timber. The construction arose directly from tensions between Great Britain and the Netherlands starting with 1664. The Castle's purpose was to defend the Dutch colony and also support Dutch ships passing from the Netherlands to the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia).

The Castle is the best preserved example of a Dutch East India Company fort due to extensive restorations carried out in the 1980s. Today it hosts a Military Museum and the Cape Town Highlanders Regiment. (Georgiana Hedesan, June 2018)
